in 1996 paul birken released the classic and now rare as hens teeth surfin superior double 12inch on woody mcbrides communique label. this was to be a revered and respected record that influenced many and is still talked about and played today. now, some 19 years later he follows it up with part 2. nobody works as hard at getting human sounding chattering from their machines as birken and here he treats us to 8 massive cuts of grinding techno that are as humorous as they are danceable.

the swedish label dirty hands strikes back with double force. this motor driven techno 12 is hard to hide from. labelboss per hammar says when patrick gave me this track, i played it in every set for the 3 months. when he later told me that he hasnt found a home for it, we said in choir ‘lets do a dirty hands release out of it!. and after that moment, all my previous plans for the label was deleted. with patricks ruthless original combined with per hammars jungle sounding edit on the flip, this release isnt anything but a key into the producer duos minds.

with iyewaye, the first solo-ep after the release of his fifth album i am ok last year, oliver koletzki shows himself in a new, but not altogether unfamiliar light: since his breakthrough in 2005 with der mückenschwarm koletzki hasnt sounded this hard. gone is the pop-angle, replaced by a dark sound-aesthetic and raw energy. but even here, in the techno realm, oliver koletzki demonstrates his inimitable sense for melody: thus, the gloomy and driving framework of iyewaye is lit up by a crystal-clear synth-sequence. similarly, ipuza, which hypnotizes by way of reduction and repetition, is funky in its core thanks to a rolling tribal groove. functional, but with heart and soul.

following gary becks hard-hitting remix of dj rush >she is fine< on bek014, he returns with an ep of solely his own productions. >rascal< brings forward two of his biggest tracks in recent times. the title track, >rascal< returns to garys more familiar sound with swelling pads andsynths clad in fading loops and textures. the track varies in intensity but maintains the groove, as it balances a peak time feel with an almost reflective ambiance. >video siren< is stripped and straight-up techno. it avoids over-complication by keeping the elements to an absolute minimum, highlighting his ability to create atmosphere, tension and drive, using a less is more attitude.

first up here is kenloto, a chunky bit of bass driven house with crisp perc. it builds to a nice tense peak with lots of loose, jumbled textures and will make for a fine bit of peak time listening. the other original is whack, which is another tough house cut with firm bass, old school new jersey snare patterns and rolling drums that are rich, warm and rubbery. miguel lobo s remix is a more spritely thing with lithe chords, colourful synths and and a pent up energy that just never stops giving. closing out the fantastic package is paul c & paulo martini who remix kenloto into a trippy affair with ghoulish voices, hard hitting drums and lots of dark wave energy that will carry you late into the night.

creme organization turn to the mysterious ivvvo and lisbon producer lake haze for a new single that comes backed with a remix from label regular legowelt. the single 1 is a hard hitting but fuzzy, misty and hugely spacious house track with deep jacking drums, haunting synths spiralling all around and freaky voices buried deep within. hugely atmospheric and lovably imperfect, it then gets remixed by legowelt. his version of the track flips it on its head, strips back some of the white noise fuzz and reimagines it as a driving techno cut with impish chords, retro arps and high pressure stabs. its a peak time bomb and ensures that this release is a high impact one indeed.

the soul notes imprint has never restricted itself to just one sound. ever since it emerged in late 2011, the basque county based outfit has shown several sides of its identity and has developed into a diverse and well balanced home. one of the labels usual suspects is cologne native, adryiano. after reaping some havoc with his efforts on the snx series early last year, adryiano has been crafting his down south ep (ironically) somewhere in the north rhine-westphalian concrete jungle. the down south ep is buldging with deep sine basses, fine rhythmic synthwork and lavish but hefty beats. the title track showcases these exact things best. the essence of adryiano s latest effort is still somewhat hard to pin down. a lot of different moods are going on throughout the ep while the overall sounds maintains it s own glance. from the deep machinefunk on down south to the broken beats of feel what you do. all of these bits have a nice theme to them.

currently causing quite a stir on the underground, the jerome hill remix of marshall jeffersons s trax classic lost in the groove is a complete re-interpretation, solid jacking (hard) house music using the original vocal that s cut loud onto the vinyl and worms inside your head and has been doing serious damage in the clubs and festivals last year. now with all licensing and red tape cleared away, it s set for release. dancer boom boom is actually a collaboration between acid legend adonis and sidney winters, with a mix down by house legend frankie knuckles. this sat on the b side of am a dog on trax records and is rare & obscure to say the least, but once the needle touches the groove you know it s a killer. massive kick drums and mysterious organ scales, this one is a mad mad tune ! produced in 1987 (and sounding like nothing else from that year) it s been given a very slight and very respectful re-arrangement by jerome hill, remastered and cut super loud. strictly limited and if the previous titles on the label are anything to go by, this one will sell out equally quick.

james freud is not the deceased singer of the australian new wave band the models. james freud is not a young art-school dropout with an affinity for electronic music. james freud does not live in berlin - he seems to come out of the blue and it is hard to say whether his production is analogue or digital, whether it is sampled material or sound design. because of the strange maturity of his work the tracks seem to come from both the past and the future. thanks to the digging-qualities of dj good news (who runs the hamburg poem-label) a selection of james freuds oeuvre is now brought to light through the 12inch 5-track extended play - to cut a long story short: mental futurism is wise optimism.

san francisco-based dj/producer nick monaco has long been part of the soul clap family, releasing his first 12- on the label back in 2012. mating call, a double 12- set running at album length, is easily his most expansive release yet. it s typically eccentric, delivering a range of songs - featuring his own distinctive vocals - that blend numerous styles whilst retaining a loose, funky and altogether rather kaleidoscopic feel. it s rooted in balearic pop, but also touches on dub, deep house, boogie, dub disco and a strangely deep and contemporary take on the triple-beat rhythms of glam rock. it s hard to accurately describe, but is really rather good, certainly, it s one of soul clap s strongest releases of recent times.

third instalment in the stargazer series of unearthed classics from italys 80s afro funky scene. neatly packaged on two loud-pressed vinyl 12 inchess, this compilation includes a raft of in-demand and hard-to-find cuts which found cult status in legendary clubs such as cosmic and typhoon. great package of essential afro funky classics!

while their sporadic appearance remains a frustration, it s hard to find fault with boe recordings halal prepared series of eps. this third installment of the series, which lands 12 months after it s predecessor, contains another quarter of high quality deep house jams. the real highlights - to our ears, at least - are the two tracks that doff a cap to classic detroit techno, whilst keeping their feet firmly rooted in deep house. both -star struck- by chicago deep and havantepe s -plane waves- capture the retro-futurist spirit and stargazing electronics associated with the motor city perfectly. elsewhere, keep an eye out for taelue s -desolate dreams-, which offers a bittersweet trip into ultra-deep house territory.

before dj gregory was point g. point g is an alias used by the french produced to explore a gritty, raw sound steeped in abstract vibes but with a very basic approach, which makes it all the more captivating making a strong impact on the underground scene in the 90s, point g gained much respect amongst his peers with timeless releases like the raw ep, on the raw again ep…. originals vinyl copies of many of point gs early tracks are notoriously hard to find, giving this comeback even more kudos.

radio bands radio rap the one and only single by a group of djs from the radio fantasy pirate station has long been an in-demand gem with italo-disco diggers and balearic heads alike. with original copies both hard to find and expensive (currently hovering around the l60 mark online), it s great to see archeo recordings giving the 1984 cut a much-needed reissue on heavyweight vinyl. the quirky vocal version a loose and funky disco-rap record with additional boogie synths and all italian vocals is accompanied by the superb instrumental version, which perfectly showcases danilo ciarchi s superb production.

danish nord records are ready with their eighth record. this time nord007 is made by central. the ep contains four hard-hitting techno tracks straight outta aarhus, denmark.

off the back of the success of audens first hotflush ep, the enigmatic alias returns to scubas label with another hard hitting four-tracker, wall to wall. lock in throws you in headfirst - fast-paced drum loops layered with slices of jarring techno and a driving bassline that would be welcomed on the darkest dancefloors. utopian, initially a more languid cut, juxtaposes an almost cerebral landscape with hard hitting percussion, only allowing the listener a short breather before hurtling back in with perisheds swirling synths and trippy electronic jabs. ending on xirox, auden crafts a slightly more down-tempo cut, boasting a catchy groove that only gets better with each listen. whoever auden may or may not be, one thing is for certain – hes carving his place deep in technos panorama.

jonas kopp pumps the drums hard on opener shibu. it is pure peak-time material, fit with siren like synths, heavy kicks and hi-hats to get the shoulders moving. kopps tracks are always masterfully tailored for the dancefloor, and this is no exception the six-and-a-half-minute ride is richly detailed with ups, downs and subtle changes. dadub take the record deeper with force continuum abuse.
